Reading, Pa. (Apr. 19, 2012) - Alvernia University posted a pair of scores in the 70s and defended the home turf shooting 319 to win the Alvernia Men's Golf Spring Invitational Thursday afternoon at Reading Country Club.
Junior
Casey Osborne (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) shot 78 and senior
Justin Arnt (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) righted the ship after a shakey start to post 79. Junior
Tim Pici (Malvern, Pa./West Chester East) and freshman
Chris Van Natta (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) both shot 81. Senior
Scott Downes (Sinking Spring, Pa./High Point Baptist), playing as an individual, shot 79.
Osborne opened his day with a birdie at the par 5 14th but gave it back with a triple at the tough par 3 15th. It was his second birdie-triple start this week. The 15th hole played nearly 240 yards from the back tee into the wind and saw 28 scores of double or worse out of the 59-player field.
Osborne played his next nine holes in 1-under par then had three bogies and two doubles in his last seven holes.
Arnt had a nightmare start going 6-over thru his first three holes, but rebounded nicely playing the next 14 holes in 1-over before finishing with a double at the par 4 12th. Pici carded two birdies on the day, but also a quad on the 15th. Van Natta played a 9-hole stretch midway through his round in 1-over, but played the other nine holes in 10-over.
The Crusaders won multiple invitationals in a semester for the first time--they won the Moravian Invitational at Woodstone back in March, and will look to improve their play heading into the Commonwealth Championships next weekend at Hershey Country Club.
